Elise and I have been travelling around the world for more or less 10 years. Throughout that time, we have been trying to come up with ways we can travel longer and see as much as possible-without breaking the bank! Over our time we have learnt how to get free flights with frequent flyer programs and also how to look for the best possible flight. This always ensures us we get the cheapest deals! Even though we are veterans in the travel game we still have much to learn when it comes to traveling for free.
Nothing Is For Free
My Dad used to tell me that nothing is ever really for free and for most of my life I have believed that is the case. I am the biggest skeptic when I see advertising telling me I will get something for nothing.
However, that doesn’t mean there aren’t ways you can save money here and there and make it last longer on your travels. On our last trip, we made our money last for 2 years of travelling!
Many Ways To Save
There are a number of ways you can save money when on the road. Here are some creative ways you may not of thought of yet…
The best way to travel on the cheap or get free flights is to enter as many competitions as possible. The more you enter the more chance you have of winning! We have a friend Mike Corey from Kick The Grind that has been travelling for the past two years on the back of winning competition after competition. He’s had flights, accommodation and even meals paid for and he is set to be traveling to a Panama Island this summer. Now that is the type of travel I could get used to!
Get Free Flights
Qantas Holidays is giving away free flights in the month of June 2012. All you need to do is book any Qantas Holidays and travel no later than 31st October 2012 and you will be placed in the draw to win back the entire price of your airline tickets! You could get free flights to your destination, anywhere in the world. We now just have the hard decision of selecting a holiday to choose for our next trip!
This offer applies to any Qantas flight to anywhere in the world, in any class. To make your booking, visit your local travel agent, call 1300 656 722 or visit www.flyfreedraw.com.au.
Join Loyalty Programs
It may sound obvious, but you can save a ton of money and also get free flights from joining airlines loyalty programs. We have joined every one of the programs so we are sure; whenever we fly we are accruing frequent flyer miles. Each one of those points is a step closer to a getting upgraded! We’ve only once had the pleasure of being upgraded to business class and would love to go back there again!
Some airlines over-book flights and you may be the lucky one to get bumped to the next flight if it has been. Be sure to ask the flight attendant when checking in if your flight has been overbooked and you may then be first priority to get bumped for the next flight. You will not only get your flight for free but if you need to stay overnight you will get reimbursed for your accommodation as well.
Get A Travel Job
This is probably the best and easiest way to get free travel. There are many careers which need you to travel to exotic locations on a regular basis. Maybe think about doing a travel writing course or working for a company that has offices around the world and ask to be stationed at one of the locations you desire to visit.
Elise and I were just wondering the other day if we could go anywhere in the world for free, it would definitely be Iceland. It is one of those destinations that couldn’t be any further away from Australia and is one of the most expensive places to travel to for Australians. It is a dream of ours to see the Northern Lights and swim in the famous Blue Lagoon.
It is hard to travel for free but sometimes, only sometimes, there are some deals that truly are for free. I better let my dad know about the Qantas Holidays free flights before it slips away…
Have you ever flown for free? Where did you go?
